Yesterday i was tasked with migrating a Sophos Enterprise Console Management Server to a new machine.
If the server is built using the standard Sophos SEC installer with all roles on one server it can be quite complicated to move the installation. I will leave the link to the documentation here for reference:
https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/28276
In this instance the database was built on the corporate SQL cluster using manual (Sophos provided) installation scripts so the standard documented migration path was not going to work.
Now due to this i planned just to wipe the installation and start again, the environment i was working on only had a handful of servers and re-installing the Sophos client on each server was not a big task.
However when running through the installer on the new server it gave me the option to use the existing database, i was then presented with two “Update Managers” within the Console.
from here on the process was simple, all i had to do was configure the new update manger to match the settings of the old one and reconfigure the proxies, firewalls an other networking equipment to allow the new update manager download access.
Once the Update Manager was configured i then changed the updating policies to point to the new server and waited for the endpoints to receive the new configuration.
We then logged into a few servers to confirm the connection and that the clients could download from the new server.
The customer then confirmed they where happy for the old server to be decommissioned, from within the Console i deleted the old update manager (Right Click Delete on the object) then uninstalled the Management Server from the older server using Add/Remove Programs.
